How so? Because I don’t see it. Simon was always dependant on Kamina, and that would always seem to hold him back, no matter how many times Kamina would say he believes in him. I can’t see how his abilities would’ve progressed with Kamina still alive.
As much as I would’ve liked him to stay alive, I just don’t see how Simon would’ve grown up and progressed depending on him. I feel his death was for Simon to realize that he has to start doing things for himself. Part of his black hole of depression, I believe, was also confusion because he didn’t know how to function without Kamina.
I sort of look at it this way: Kamina’s shadow is huge. Gigantic. It’s something that Simon was standing in all of the time because he was hiding behind Kamina, standing in his shadow for support and security. But when you’re left exposed, you don’t know what to do.
Sure, Simon was dependent on Kamina just as Kamina was dependent on Simon. But Simon had no way of knowing that because Kamina never told him. He didn’t really realize his own worth and strengths. He wasn’t exactly praised like Kamina was. How do you bring out your best when nobody really acknowledges it? Because sometimes you don’t know how needed you are until somebody supports you for you. I’m not saying that this is always the case but it’s common if your self-esteem isn’t high up in the clouds.
So unless something as equally drastic as death happened, Simon probably would have continued to tag along behind Kamina like a baby duckling.

so damn true it hurts … not only did they kill Kamina but they just HAD to kill Kittan too =/
Because if Kamina had never died, Simon would’ve never had to take the step out of his shadow. He’d never have to think...
